European football's governing body, UEFA, is always on the keen lookout against measures which brings a stain to the image of the game and following a recent development, those efforts have been witnessed again.
Fans of Bayern Munich have been banned from attending the away tie of their Champions League quarter final.
This was after their supporters threw fireworks on the pitch in their 3-1 win against Lazio.
Recall that, UEFA fined Bayern €40,000 following their 2-1 win against Copenhagen in October after the visiting fans set off fireworks. The Bavarian side were given a suspended one-match ban from purchasing away tickets in December.
Hence, the occurrence at the Olimpico against Lazio triggered the ban.
"We have to accept this punishment. Not only were pyrotechnics set off, but also fired deliberately onto the field, directly endangering bystanders," Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen said in response to UEFA's decision.
"This was such an explicit violation of the conditions of probation that an appeal is unfortunately futile.
"The fact we now have to play away without the support of our fans is a big blow. A small group of individual offenders have done a disservice to all our supporters and the team."
The draw for the last eight will take place on Friday. The first legs will take centre stage on April 9th and 10th, and the second legs are set for April 16th and 17th.
